Campus Corps: Meeting community need by engaging students in meaningful service

The AmeriCorps Campus Corps program at SKC is part of the Montana Campus Compact, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote volunteerism, public service and service learning on Montana’s college and university campuses. SKC is one of 11 campuses across Montana that host Campus Corps programs. Serving on the Campus Corps team at SKC enables members who are interested in community service to serve in ways that directly impact the college community and the Flathead Indian Reservation. During their term of service, members receive a stipend during their service and an education award when their service is complete.

SKC Farm to College

The SKC Farm to College Program was created in July of 2006 through the collaboration of the Salish Kootenai College Extension Office, Grow Montana, and the Montana Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA program.  The mission of the program is to promote awareness within the community of the health, economic, and environmental benefits of eating local food, and to build the relationships, knowledge, infrastructure and support necessary to bring local foods into the Three Wolves Cafeteria on campus.

The SKC *VISTA Farm to College Coordinator is a member of Grow Montana’s “Food Corps,” which is a network of AmeriCorps *VISTA volunteers, at The University of Montana, Missoula County Public Schools, The University of Montana Western, Montana State University, and Bozeman Public Schools, working to promote a sustainable food system in Montana accessible to all of our citizens.

For more information on the program, please contact Patrick Murphy, the Farm to College VISTA Coordinator by email at farm2college@skc.edu, or by phone at (406)-275-4941.
